First day cool enough to hike in wool shirt and wind shirt. Woo hoo.
Fabulous scenery on good trail. Started with a stretch on roman road, then miles of old military road along the French border. Then good quality trail. Limestone and Karst formation. Handsome cliffs and mounds in an area rich in caves and popular with spelunkers.
We arrived at 4:00 at delightful Garelli Refugi. 80 beds here, but in a fortunate anomaly only 4 guests tonight. So it's very calm and quiet. The host said they were at or near capacity most nights in July, so we're very lucky. Grandma and grandpa run the place with three young men assisting. Son, daughter-in-law with 1 and 3 year olds are here for a month. It's a two hour walk from a road. They get three helicopter drops of supplies each season. They grow vegetables in a greenhouse. The rest they carry in on regular trips up and down, by foot. It's a spectacular setting at 1950 meters, looking down to the valley floor and with beautiful limestone cliffs adjacent.
I like this arrangement of eating the evening meal at a refugi and sleeping in the tent nearby.
New trip birds: Lesser Whitethroat
We're happy and healthy and thoroughly satisfied after a very fine day and a big tasty dinner.
