Another normal day of walking. We pushed the 13+ miles to the small town of Ueyama without a lunch stop in hopes of finding a good cafe. Success! We found a great pizza/pasta cafe near the train station. First cheese of the entire trip. Not like Europe where cheese is a staple and highlight.
Found the "supermarket" which was a modest grocery store with absolutely nothing useful to us. It sells ingredients for people who cook, not the food we need. They didn't have beer, so we followed google maps to the liquor store. It's primarily a sake shop with a few cases of beer on the side. A beautiful wooden interior and a very modest exterior. The door was unlocked, lights were off, and nobody responded when we entered and called out loudly. Can you imagine any other country where the liquor store is wide open and untended? That seems like a primary destination for louts.
We then walked a half mile to the other side of town to the Mini Stop, which consistent with our expectations had everything we needed.
On the way into town we found a good size picnic shelter on a small hilltop park in the middle of town. 15-18 hours of rain was scheduled to start at 3:00, so we returned to the shelter to spend the night.
First Photo shows our $25 sushi + side dishes and liquor picnic dinner purchased at the Mini Stop.
Second photo shows half our shelter.
We're happy and healthy and dry and comfortable in our shelter.
