Great day, marred by 4 hours of mostly very light rain. A new life bird today: Black Guillimot.
We started in glorious sun with a beautiful five mile walk around the headlands/beaches/dunes near Durness. Beautiful to wake up to a mostly clear sky, 45 degrees and calm. Even the interior mountains were clear.
Mid day we sat down to a picnic lunch, only the ~4th time in three weeks that it's been warm and dry enough to spread out for a meal outdoors. Sadly by the end of lunch the clouds had closed in and it began to dribble. Only very light showers until 4:00, but then steady rain until 8:30. Finally stopped so we could get out of the tent to enjoy the views at our 5-star site. We're camped 3 feet above high tide line at the south end of the ~10 mile long sea Loch Eriboll. Rocky mountains next to us; no wind and therefore glassy still water; loons calling; Eiders nearby; beautiful lighting with occasional sun poking through.
It is just very frustrating to have frequent rain. We're in a beautiful spot, but from 6:00 when we set up the tent until 8:30 it dripped steadily and we ate dinner in the tent instead of sitting outside taking in the scene. Particularly frustrating because the whole time it rained we could see that it was clear at the coast; but this afternoon we walked inland along the edge of the sea loch, and the further we walked inland the more the rain fell on us :(
We like coastal walking. Always lots of birds, diverse scenery, the sounds of the sea. Good stuff.
And finally, we are still healthy and happy.
