Spent the morning walking through Cataloochee valley, which was pretty and had some birds we could admire. Then hitched back to Big Creek.
Then walked for a long time toward Cosby Campground ( another NPS campgrounds, as are Big Creek and Cataloochee), expecting to hitch. But after zero cars in >2 hours, and onset of rain, we started back toward Big Creek. We did eventually meet a car and get a lift to Cosby, so here we are camped. Rainy, but the very nice campground host took us to a nearby creek where three Pink Lady Slippers are in bloom, and seeing them is a real treat.
Tomorrow we walk back to Big Creek via trail, about 10 miles.
Ovenbird is vying for Bird of the Trip award. These warblers have a distinctive loud song, and have been present nearly every day.
Blackburnian Warbler feeds in the understory, so we've had great looks at that stunning warbler.
We are happy and healthy. The rain may continue through the night, but tomorrow should have fair weather.
