Oct 6 - an inventory of trail users

We saw our first bald eagles today, two adults with one young bird. We also saw our first Eastern Towhees, which was long overdue.

We have met two other Backpackers in our first five days of hiking. We have seen many hundreds of cyclists. There are people out for a half day, there are people riding to DC and staying in inns, so they carry very little. And there are riders with panniers and tents, although, that probably represents 5% of the cyclists. On the morning of day two we were passed by about 100 cyclists in Lyra in less than one hour. We speculated that they had started their ride in Pittsburgh that morning and were headed to DC in a three or perhaps four day trip. Other cyclists we have spoken to are taking between five and 12 days to complete the 334 mile trip.

Somewhere between 30 and 40% of the cyclists are riding e-bikes. Jim thinks it's about 30%, and Amy thinks it's perhaps as much as 50%. That means that tomorrow will need to do a little bit of a count to resolve the confusion.

We went through the town of Confluence this afternoon, where we left the Youghiogheni Tiver and are instead following the Casselman River upstream. We are camped at mile 95, right nest to the river.

It was a beautiful day of walking. We are happy and healthy and ready to sleep.
