March 29 - our first river wade

It would have taken roughly the same amount of time to walk up the river to the first bridge and back, but it looked more fun to wade, and we were fortunate to be there at the lowest tide of the month. The photo shows the river we waded, but it's hard to get a sense from the photo. As it spread out on the beach, it was never more than 14 or 16 inches deep where we crossed, but was moving pretty quickly over walnut to apple sized smoothly rounded cobbles. We just figured out how the gravel bars connected, so we were never in a deeper channel. Thankfully, we are in Spain instead of Alaska, so the water is 56° instead of 36°.

We had an hour or two of light drizzle last night of no consequence. Today was great weather again, mostly sunny high of 55 or 58.

I think we've mentioned that great campsites are not abundant on this trip because the terrain is not generally level and there is enough gorse and blackberry to make many sites impossible. Tonight we found a spectacular tent site on a path overlooking a sand beach, with beautiful rock outcrops and crashing waves.

As far as we can recall, since we left Salinas a few days ago, all of the beaches have been stone cobbles instead of sand, until this beach we are camped next to. We don't completely understand the geology. We have noticed that the absence of big sand beaches means there are very few second homes and holiday rentals.

We are happy and healthy and looking forward to more good walking tomorrow.
